Choosing to spend my summer working at camp was one of the most impactful decisions I made for my faith journey. Immersed in a Christ-centered community, I had the opportunity to serve, invest in the next generation and actively share my faith. Each day stretched and strengthened my relationship with Jesus in ways I never expected.
Here’s how working at camp deepened my faith:
Living alongside a faithful community

One of the most transformative parts of working at camp is being surrounded by a community that is committed to faith, service and growth. During my time as a junior counselor at Riverside Bible Camp, older staff members who daily lived out their faith made a deep impact on my life. They didn’t just talk about following Jesus; they modeled it through their kindness, prayers and wisdom. Whether it was sharing Scripture, offering encouragement or simply walking alongside me in challenges, their faith strengthened mine and showed me what it truly means to live in a Christ-centered community.

Learning to share your faith

Working at camp provides countless opportunities to share your faith in meaningful ways. Leading Bible studies, praying for campers, sharing your testimony—these moments often stretch you. In moments of uncertainty, God works powerfully, providing the words, the courage and the confidence to speak about His love. As you step out in faith, you make an impact in the lives of others and grow deeper in your relationship with Christ.

A life of service

Matthew 10:28 shares: “ … the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus served us, and we get to show others His love by serving them. There are countless ways to do this at camp. Whether you serve as a counselor and care for your campers, or you serve on the grounds crew and spend your days mowing grass and clearing brush, guests at camp get to experience the sacrificial love of God overflowing through you.

Intentionally follow Jesus

In Christian circles, we often talk about what we should do. We should pray, read our bibles, spend time in community and share our faith. At camp, we put all of these into practice by having time in the schedule to be intentional about our relationship with Jesus. We don’t simply talk about the importance of reading the bible—we take time to do it. We stop and pray together before meals, before bed and throughout the day. Practicing these spiritual disciplines at camp shows the benefit of practicing them once summer is over and we’re back home.

Trusting God through challenges

Working at camp is so much fun, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t challenges. Opportunities like navigating how to help a homesick camper, managing conflict with a coworker or being outside of your comfort zone all help you rely on God. Practicing trusting in Him is a great way to grow your faith.
