Working at camp is fast-paced and sometimes challenging, yet I rarely felt overwhelmed by stress. Camp life taught me some valuable lessons about managing stress under pressure. Here are five tips I learned at camp—and still use today.
- Get moving.
We know that physical activity releases endorphins and lowers cortisol, but sometimes heading to a packed gym doesn’t sound appealing when we’re stressed. Instead, find fun ways to move your body. At camp, that might mean climbing the wall, riding the zipline or jumping into a volleyball game. - Spend time with friends or loved ones.
The community at camp is like no other! Cabinmates become fast friends and camp staff go out of their way to make sure their teammates feel loved and supported. A support system is crucial when it comes to dealing with stress. Take some time to call a friend or meet up with a family member for encouragement. - Unplug and get outside.
Taking even a five-minute break from your devices can help manage stress. Enjoy a short walk, take a few deep breaths on the porch or simply look up at the trees to help keep you grounded. Sometimes all you need is to feel the sunshine on your face, hear the birds singing or take in the beauty of nature to refresh your perspective. - Work with your hands.
Creativity is a great way to reduce anxiety and stress. At camp, guests can visit the art station to paint, make friendship bracelets or draw. Take some time for yourself to work with your hands, whether that’s through woodworking, painting with watercolors or something else you enjoy. - Fuel with good food.
- At camp, there is no shortage of filling, nutritious meals. If you’re in a stressful season, prioritize eating well to keep your energy up and your mind sharp. Staying nourished helps you manage stress more effectively and allows you to serve others with your best self.
