Internships, volunteering, studying abroad, working at summer camp, nannying … there are so many fun ways to spend your summer. Young adult/college summers are unique in that you get to try something new for just a few months that may not be as easily accessible later in life, so intentionality is important as you make this decision. After all, you only get so many college summers! If you’re torn between several options, consider these five questions as you process your decision.

  1. Will you enjoy each (or most) days?
Every job comes with challenges, but you should enjoy this summer. If you know you don’t like spending all day inside, work at camp instead of folding clothes at the mall. If you’d rather be around people than behind a desk, working at camp, building relationships beats working alone in a cubicle.
  1. Who will you work with?
It’s been said that you are the sum of your five closest friends. As you work hard and celebrate victories, you want a solid team by your side.Creating lifelong memories at camp could be a great opportunity to grow close to others.
  1. What will your impact be?
After the summer is done, what do you want to have accomplished? If you want to be a mentor to kids and invite them into a community filled with hope and belonging, camp is the place for you.
  1. How will you grow?
After the summer has ended, what kind of skills do you want to have gained? Internships can be a great way to apply what you’ve learned in school. If you’re searching to gain skills in leadership, public speaking, teamwork and growth in your confidence camp is perfect for you.
  1. Will there be another opportunity to do something similar?
Having the chance to hold a new position and potentially move somewhere else for only a few months is a benefit of these unique college summers. If you want to take advantage of that, consider if you’ll have another opportunity to do something similar later in life. Working at camp is going to be a lot easier during college summers than it will be later in life.

However you choose to spend your summer, have fun!
